Listen to the Tower of Voices at the Flight 93 National Memorial

Located on the ridge above the Memorial Plaza at the crash site, the Visitor Center Complex hosts the exhibit area, Learning Center, Allee and Western Overlook trailheads, and Flight Path Walkway and Overlook. The Memorial Plaza nearby is a one-mile drive from the Visitor Center Complex; the two walking trails can also be used to visit the Memorial Plaza. A 1/4 mile walkway alongside the crash site and debris field leads you to the Wall of Names. 

Part of the architect's vision for the Flight 93 Memorial is for it to become a place of renewal. To do this, the Friends of Flight 93, National Park Service, and National Park Foundation have continued a reforestation initiative for the past six years that will eventually result in 150,000 newly-planted trees. Last year, 11,600 seedlings were planted across 17 acres. These trees form an essential windbreak to protect the trees planted in the Memorial Groves. 

Another point of interest at the Flight 93 National Memorial is the breathtaking Tower of Voices. Said to be one of the most beautiful monuments in the nation (and the first structure of its kind in the world), the 93-foot tall hollow tower cradles forty aluminum wind chimes that symbolize the forty passengers and crew members on Flight 93. Each has been carefully constructed to create a unique tone, or voice. Using music theory, the harmony that the chimes produce represents the nobility of the site while the dissonance symbolizes the tragic event that consecrated the site seventeen years ago. Construction of the Tower of Voices is expected to be completed this year, with an opening ceremony likely occurring at the 2018 Observance Ceremony.

Annually, the memorial holds it Luminaria. Forty candle-lit lanterns are carried to the Wall of Names and placed below the names of the passengers and crew members. The memorial will have special late hours on this evening, closing at 9:30am. The Luminaria will be held on Monday, September 10, 2018. On Tuesday, September 11th, the Observance features brief remarks, reading of the names, and ringing of the Bells of Remembrance.
