Experience the Pennsylvania Renaissance Fair in Manheim
Even though your interest in dragons and swords had waned to an almost passive disinterest to the magical and medieval (and you’ve only re-read the Lord of the Rings once in the past decade), we’re almost positive you’ll find something you like at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire. Across thirteen weekends, the “PA Ren Faire” at Mount Hope Estate opens its gates for visitors to live the excitement and adventure of 16th century England. Musical and theatrical performances, hundreds of costumed actors, delicious food, and much more all make the Shire one of the best destinations in Pennsylvania this summer. Each weekend has a different theme so take your pick and plan ahead!
In August, the PA Ren Faire’s themed weekends are the World Carnival (8/11-12) with costume competitions and a Red Cross Blood Drive (and yes, it is totally acceptable to dress up as the Mother of Dragons in all her glory). The Celtic Weekend (8/18-19) features the Highland Games and Men in Kilts competition. The last theme, Myths and Legends (8/25-26), celebrates storytellers and will hold a Parade of Hounds. September’s themes are exciting, too! The month starts with Heroes of the Realm (9/1-3) to celebrate our active military, veterans, police, firefighters, EMTs, and reserve troops. Wizarding Weekend (9/8-9) featuring activities like Wand Making and Quidditch matches. Pirate enthusiasts should hold off for the Pyrate Invasion weekend (9/15-16) and the featured event, the treasure hunt. For a full list of the themed weekends, click here.
Besides the fun themes, the Daily Writ is packed full of events and shows. Cheer for your favorite knight at the Ultimate Joust, watch the nail-bitingly close game of human chess, or join in the revelry as you watch and listen to live music and performances by talented musicians and actors throughout the day. There’s also a never-ending range of living history activities including DIY workshops, demonstrations, and quality goods for sale by merchants (anything from a fantasy sword to fresh cotton candy). Visitors to the Shire with a taste for beer can take part in the Pub Crawl with the Washing Well Wenches on a guided tour full of good beer and bad jokes while the wine-lovers can visit Oarhouse Provisions for wine and spirits tastings of select Mount Hope Wines and Big Spring Distillery Spirits. Place your order for bottles to go and pick them up as you exit the festival grounds later.
The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire is held at Mount Hope Estate every weekend starting August 4th until October 28, 2018. That’s thirteen weekends of mirth and merriment! Click here to get more information and to purchase your tickets or season pass.
