Explore the Outdoors in the Lebanon Valley
Located in the heart of Central Pennsylvania, right between Lancaster and Dauphin Counties, the Lebanon Valley offers outdoor adventures around every turn. Whether exploring on wheels, waterways, or walking shoes, don’t miss these local favorites for the ultimate outdoor experience!
On Foot:
With your hiking boots in tow, exploration is just a step away in the Valley. Take a hike on the Appalachian Trail, the longest walking-only footpath in the world, which travels 9.5 mile in the Lebanon Valley and crosses the historic Waterville Bridge. For an easier walk, check out any one of the many trailheads along the Lebanon Valley Rails to Trails, a well-maintained, low-grade trail. And if you’re looking for a hike with a view, head out to Clarence Schock Memorial Park where a 1.5-mile hike will take you to the Governor Dick Observation Tower. Climb the alternating ladders inside the tower for the 360 degree, 5-county view from the top!
On Wheels:
If biking is your groove, take a two-wheel tour of the Valley along one of ten scenic bike rides, routed and tested by the Lebanon Valley Bicycle Coalition. At Swatara State Park, enjoy a variety of trails and terrains for both traditional and mountain bikes. Visit during the fall to catch the beauty of the changing leaves as you bike throughout the park. For a straightforward ride with an even grade and few turns, bring your bike to the Lebanon Valley Rails to Trails. Currently covering 20 miles, and with more to come soon, the Rail Trail is perfect for a variety of distances.
On the Water:
Whether you’re looking to swim, paddleboard, boat, or kayak, the Valley has an option for you! At Memorial Lake State Park, bring your licensed watercraft for a day on the water at this beautiful 85-acre lake. Don’t have a watercraft of your own? No problem, Cocoa Kayak provides paddleboat, canoe, paddleboard, and kayak rentals right at the lake. Cocoa Kayak also hosts group floats on the scenic Swatara Creek Water Trail with shuttle and rental included. And for the days when you’d rather be in the water than on the water, take a trip to Mount Gretna Lake & Beach for swimming, sunbathing, and sand in your toes (please note: you must purchase tickets to visit this lake).
