Lancaster County’s Morning Mud Sales

Get your hands dirty this spring; it’s mud sale season in Lancaster County and that means bargain goods, rare quilts, and authentic Amish hand-crafts are all only a bid away. If you haven’t been to these auction events, you’ve been overlooking one of the most exciting and unique traditions of Pennsylvania Dutch Country.

From antique wooden furniture to handmade Amish quilts, the mud sales of Lancaster County have some truly valuable items you can’t find anywhere else in the world. Take advantage of the opportunity, not just to buy things, but as a way for us “ordinary” folk to mingle with the extraordinary Amish people of Pennsylvania. These events are one of very few ways we have for us to break barriers, especially because the Amish are infamous for their seclusion. But at these mud sales, you can interact with the Amish and it’s all for a good cause; the auctions are held as benefits for many of the region’s firehouses, making up the bulk of their annual budget. This provides the county’s fire companies with modern equipment.

The food is great, too, with servings of chicken corn soup, French fries, handmade milkshakes, roast pork barbecue sandwiches, apple wood smoked meats, and the delicious twisted soft pretzels made by the Amish women. If you’re a capital area local, you may have already tasted these salty treats at a nearby farmer’s market on the weekends. 

Mud sales start early, usually between 8:00 and 8:30 in the morning and they can attract thousands of people. Scout out to the auction beforehand to look for those special items you may want to gift to a loved one at home or keep for yourself. And take caution, some of the firehouses have multiple auctions going on at the same time. You don’t want to miss out on that perfect piece, especially if it’s only on the other side of the yard.
