Touch Base With the Altoona Curve
Reminiscent of its hometown heritage, the Altoona Curve baseball team was named as homage to the curveball pitch as well as in honor of the nearby historic three track railroad, the Horseshoe Curve. At the base of the rugged landscape we know as the Allegheny Mountains, this National Historic Landmark is considered an engineering marvel of the world, making a 20-day trip between our state’s largest cities into only a 15-hour train ride.
On the baseball field, though, the Double-A Pittsburgh Pirates-affiliated team lives up to its namesake. The Curve’s home field, The Peoples Natural Gas Field, only adds another layer of railroad reverence to Altoona’s minor league baseball team with its façade of an old-fashioned railroad roundhouse. PNG Field is also one of the most unique baseball fields in the country, with a rollercoaster built right next to it, giving visitors of the amusement park a bird’s eye view at the Curve players below.
The Curve has a good reputation in the minor league as the Pirates’ affiliate, having taking home the Eastern League Title in 2010 as well as the Western Division Title in 2004 and a second time in 2010.
The season-opening series against the Harrisburg Senators on the capitol area’s City Island is the third consecutive year that the Curve and Senators opened their seasons together. First home game at The Peoples Natural Gas Field is April 13 at 6:00pm against Akron. Upcoming home games: April 13-15, 17-19, and 28-30. Visit the Curve’s official website to view the schedule, browse stats, and purchase tickets for an upcoming game. Last home game of the season is September 1-4, 2017. You can also shop at the official team store for Altoona Curve merchandise and souvenirs.
