Steamtown Railfest
Located on a working railroad yard in Scranton, Steamtown USA is one of the country’s most unique National Historic Sites and one of the few that dedicates itself to the story of industrialization in the United States. The museum at Steamtown’s 40-acre site details the history and technology of locomotives in America and Pennsylvania, provides informative tours and demonstrations, and also conducts excursions through the Scranton yard (and occasionally to the Delaware Water Gap) on passenger coaches. Take a tour of the locomotive shop to see how the restoration of old steam engines is done in the original roundhouse of the rail yard or walk the displays to see the Union Pacific Big Boy, the largest and most powerful train in the world. Besides Steamtown’s impressive collection of historically significant locomotives, the National Historic Site stands as representative of America’s industrial heritage and Scranton’s role in the Industrial Revolution.
Whether you’re a model collector or a member of the industry, celebrate your love of trains at Steamtown’s annual Railfest, held on the Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend, August 31st and September 1st. Enjoy locomotive shop demonstrations, model trains, live entertainment, and more. View historic railroad equipment, speeder cards, handcar rides, and tours of Mattes Street Tower. Scranton Limited and Caboose Experience short train rides are also included in the special event charge via one- or two-day passes.
Tickets to Steamtown’s Railfest 2019 are $10 for adults for one-day or $15 for two-day passes. Children are $7 one-day or $10 two-day.
