Experience 16,000 Years of History at Meadowcroft
Experience thousands of years of history in a single day at the Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village. Dig into the archaeological evidence that led scientists to conclude the rockshelter had been continuously inhabited for 16,000 years and then experience rural life in the carefully recreated 19th century village of Meadowcroft. Learn something new through living history demonstrations or take a lesson in a one-room schoolhouse. Observe a blacksmith as he forges red-hot iron or walk through a reassembled log church from 1870.
Visitors to Meadowcroft can also experience a recreated Monongahela Indian village for an intimate look into the lives of 16th-century American Indians. Enter a wigwam, inspect artifacts, and learn the strategies of Indian agriculture. Try your hand at the atlatl, a prehistoric spear used for hunting fish, waterfowl, and mammals (or participate in the annual competition in June!), or relax in the traditional Three Sisters Garden.
The Frontier Trading Post exhibit displays the collision of Europeans, Africans, and Native Americans that occurred in the 1700s. Discover how settlers adopted native food crops, clothing, and survival skills and how the trading post became the cultural mixing ground of an often violent frontier.
The Meadowcroft Rockshelter archaeological site can also be experienced on an exclusive insider tour with James Adovasio who received international acclaim for his discovery of the Rockshelter in 1973.
