The MUCK

Tioga County is home to one of Pennsylvania's largest intact wetland complexes affectionately known as "The Muck." The Bird Observation Blind offers a unique opportunity to view wildlife in a natural wetland setting. Visitors have a great chance to view rare bird species who live there or those who migrate through the area. Learn about some of the rare birds and other wildlife that frequent the marsh from interpretive displays.

More than 150 species of bird have been sighted at this wetland habitat. Birds found at the Muck include Great Blue Heron, American Bittern, Least Bittern, Marsh Wren, Wilson's Snipe, Wood Duck, Swamp Sparrow, Green Heron, Alder and Willow flycatchers, Green-winged Teal, Virginia and Sora rails, Yellow Warbler, Red-winged Blackbird, and Northern Harrier. Also present are beaver, river otter, mink, black bear and bobcat.

The blind is open year round, is handicap-accessible, and is located 300 feet into the marsh at the end of the boardwalk. Travel northwest out of Wellsboro on shared Routes 6 and 287 for about two miles. Stay on Route 287 and continue north. Just beyond the junction is found the southern end of the wetlands. The first road to the right is Muck Road, which is good for open field and wetland viewing. When visiting the Blind, please respect the needs of wildlife and other visitors by not talking on the trail and boardwalk until you reach the Blind.
