The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival
The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival is one of the region’s most exciting theatre events of the entire year with multiple world-class performances and Broadway actors in some of the biggest titles ever. Fall in love with the passionate epic of Antony and Cleopatra (July 10-Aug. 4), explore the thrilling historical drama of Henry IV, Part I (July 24-Aug. 4), or just relax and enjoy the musical tunes of Ken Ludwig’s Crazy For You (June 12-30). You’ll also find good laughs in the witty adult comedy, Private Lives (July 18-Aug.4), and the quick-change, side-splitting parody The Mystery of Irma Vep -- A Penny Dreadful (June 20-July 14). The children’s offerings are The Adventures of Robin Hood and Maid Marian (May 31-Aug.3) and the annual Shakespeare fantasia Shakespeare for Kids (July 24-Aug. 3).
Normally renowned for its intense and weighty musicals, the 28th season of the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival brings waves of laughter and toe-tapping delight. Even the seriousness of Henry IV is accompanied by the lighthearted and fascinating “extreme Shakespeare” rules that guide the performance. What it means is that Henry IV will be performed in the same way the original players did in Shakespeare’s day. Actors arrive with their lines memorized, rehearse on their own, and wear what they can find. There is also no director and very little scenery.
Before every performance, experience live renaissance music in the beautiful garden atmosphere just outside the theatre at the Shakespeare Cafe.. A refreshing menu that includes artisan sandwiches, salads, fruit parfaits, and delicious desserts will be available. You’re also welcome to bring your own picnic or purchase a couple’s picnic basket with an elegant twist. The Poet’s Basket includes smoke turkey croissants with cherry boursin spread and arugula, house-made pasta salad, fruit salad, and miniature desserts.
Your visit to the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival isn’t complete without a trip to the PSF Shoppe, open before and during intermission of all productions in the theatre lobby. Browse unique Shakespeare-inspired souvenirs, PSF merchandise, and one-of-a-kind gifts.
You can also save the date for the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival’s 2019 Luminosity Gala on June 1. Get an exclusive sneak peek at the 2019 summer season with special performances by the actors. Enjoy an unforgettable evening shared with the award-winning stars as you indulge in cocktails, conversation, a chef-curated meal, and an auction. Last year, the Luminosity Gala raised more than $160,000 in support of PFA’s education and artistic programs.
